SIGNATURE HEALTHCARE OFFERS TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM TO AREA HIGH SCHOOLS

SportSmart brings an opportunity for education, safety and prevention for athletic trainers, coaches and parents
A new partnership between Signature Healthcare and five area high schools will assist athletic trainers, coaches and school nurses to provide seamless Orthopedic Care, Medical Care, Physical Therapy and Brain Injury Treatment and Prevention to all students.

Schools will receive access to free Impact Testing by a certified impact consultant, clinically managed pre-season conditioning, and 24/7 access to emergency medical care, radiology services, physical therapy / rehab services, orthopedic surgeons, and a SportSmart Medical Director. Also offered will be free educational forums for CEU credits for Athletic Directors and Athletic Trainers, presented by Ken Lawson, MD, Chief of the Emergency Department at Signature Healthcare and SportSmart Program Director, in addition to other experts. Forum topics will include: Preseason Nutrition and Hydration; Traumatic Brain Injury; Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and others. Many of these forums will also be open to parents and teachers. Bill Buckner, former MLB first baseman and manager of the Brockton Rox, supports the program and is the spokesperson.

Participating schools include: Whitman-Hanson High School, Stoughton High, East Bridgewater High, Cardinal Spellman and Brockton High.

ImPact is a program used at all levels to create baselines for athletes, so when they experience a concussion, there is a way to measure against their normal reaction time. You cannot “grade” a concussion, the same hit to the head affects different people in different ways. Every single athlete at a professional level does the ImPact test as a baseline. The test shows us a combination of memory, spatial recognition, color recognition, word recognition, reaction time and irritability.

Under the SportSmart umbrella, Signature Healthcare will also provide Saturday clinic hours to treat student athletes at the hospital, staffed by our orthopedic surgeons.

For more information, please visit www.MySignatureCare.org/Concussion.

About Signature Healthcare
Signature Healthcare includes Brockton Hospital as well as Signature Medical Group - 150 physicians and other direct care providers - and a total of 2,500 employees operating from locations in Abington, Bridgewater, Brockton, Randolph, Raynham, Stoughton and West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. In 2008 and 2010, Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital received the Premier Award for Quality, ranking it in the top 1% of all acute care hospitals in the country.

On the street with BrocktonBeat

SeeClickFix Article-Back in late March, we told you about how one citizen dedicated an entire Facebook page to the pothole-riddled Alger Street in Brockton, MA. Now, the local blog BrocktonBeat has dedicated an entire section of its site to SeeClickFix. Described as an online news and lifestyle magazine, BrocktonBeat hopes SeeClickFix can help its community better address problems such as potholes, graffiti, and dangerous streets.
Just yesterday, BrocktonBeat itself reported an issue to SeeClickFix.
Viewed nine times, Issue #95583-Dangerous curve from 274-254 Howard Street involves the frequent occurrence of cars thrashing residents' lawns in the area. According to BrocktonBeat, there have been three accidents in less than five years where cars have misjudged this curve and/or were driving over the speed limit. The most recent happened three days ago:

"Cars, trees, and lawns have been thrashed. Latest on 4/16/11 when a car at 3am missed the curve and ended up going thru 4 peoples' front yards. Thrashed the yards, mailboxes, and doing over $1000 in property damage."

The BrocktonBeat even shot footage detailing the property damage and the car's 'path of destruction.'

GOOD NEWS FOR STOP THE POWER PLANT

DON'T THINK IT COULDN'T HAPPEN
From ACE-Good news from the Energy Facilities Siting Board yesterday! In a 4-3 vote, the EFSB instructed its staff to write a Tentative Decision rejecting Brockton Power’s proposal to use Brockton potable water for cooling purposes. The reasons raised during the discussion were that there would be environmental impacts on a stressed ecosystem, Brockton Power did not show environmental impacts, and the impacts could not be mitigated. That was after a long discussion.
The next step is the EFSB staff will write a Tentative Decision, the parties get to write reply briefs, we all get to go back to the EFSB where the parties’ lawyers make oral argument, and the EFSB votes on the Final Decision.

We are a major step closer to our goal but the EFSB members have the opportunity to reconsider their votes and so we will not know for certain until they vote on the Final Decision.

I think it will be important to have a good turnout at the next EFSB hearing and that elected officials are there to tell the EFSB that they agree Brockton Power should not be able to use Brockton potable water for its cooling towers. We do not have a date for that hearing. I would guess it will be late this summer.

Thanks to everyone who was at yesterday’s hearing.

FACTS:-From Stopthepower.net

-Brockton’s power plant will not lower our taxes or our electric bills.

-Brockton is already ranked ninth (9th) on the list of environmentally overburdened New England communities.

-Brockton is already one of the ten towns with the highest asthma hospitalization rates in Massachusetts.

-The 250 foot smokestack will release toxic pollutants for miles and change Brockton’s landscape.

-The plant emits nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, airborne particulates and carbon dioxide, a major pollutant and cause of global warming.

-Brockton Power will store 25,000 gallons of aqueous ammonia on the 13 acre site threatening West Bridgewater's drinking water.

-There will only be 20 long term jobs created by this plant, and there is no guarantee that those jobs will go to Brockton residents.

-The power plant will be built, owned and operated by a foreign based company that will sell the electricity to the National Grid.
